Cool Your Home with Trees

We all know that trees provide shade for the outdoors, but have you ever thought of how tree shade affects your indoor temperatures?

We all know that trees provide shade for the outdoors, but have you ever thought of how tree shade affects your indoor temperatures?

With summer just around the corner, we’re holding off on turning on the air conditioning for as long as possible. Trees can have an incredible cooling effect on the home, and their shade can help you use about 50% less energy!

Trees will only work for you if you plant them in the right places. The south and west sides of the home are the areas that will receive the most direct sunlight. Shrubs around those sides of the home can also have an insulating effect. Planting trees or shrubs  on the north or east sides of the house can add aesthetic appeal, but it won’t do much for your cooling costs.

To reap the benefits immediately, plant trees that are already a couple years old and show some shade foliage. Planting right in front of a window can also help your cooling costs. When you plant trees for shade, try to plant them at least four feet away from the house so their roots don’t disturb the house’s foundation as they grow.
