Bowling Ball Ladybugs

Ladybugs are always welcome in the garden. For a fun garden decoration, try making your own over-sized ladybugs from bowling balls. What a great way to create a simple artistic decoration by recycling!

If you aren’t a bowler, your local bowling alley may be able to help you out by sharing a few of their damaged bowling balls. Thrift stores are another good place to look. You can even use cement balls instead of bowling balls. Anything heavy enough to stay in place is ideal.

This photo by April Johnson gives an example of the possibilities available when you have bowling balls and paint:

If you’re not great at freehand painting, stick-on or stenciled eyes could be the way to go to make sure you end up with friendly-looking insects instead of mean-eyed bugs. And ladybugs are not the only option, although they are very cute–do anything you’d like: pigs, bunnies, bumblebees, etc. Be sure to use a paint that won’t wash away in outdoor weather. Once your bowling ball ladybug collection is all painted up and dry, set them around the yard or garden for a fun, folksy decoration.
