Scrap metal art is popular for gardens, but you don’t need to be a metalworker to create your own garden art masterpieces. Get ahold of a few empty soup cans to create metal flower art for the garden.
To begin, find several empty cans. Soup cans are great for this project, as are cans from vegetables, soft drinks, spaghetti sauces, etc. Larger cans will make larger flowers. Clean them off inside and out, and remove the labels.
Use tin snips to carefully slice the sides of the can to create a fringe. The “fringe” should be 1/2-inch or so wide and begin about an inch from the bottom of the can. Once the cuts are made, bend the fringes outward to create the appearance of flower petals.
Smaller cans placed one inside the other and held in place with wire through the centers of each can create a multi-dimensional art effect, but individual soup can flowers are just as pretty. Drill a hole in the side of the can to attach the flowers to rebar sticks for “stems.”
To make the flowers beautiful (and rustproof), paint them with acrylic paint then give them a rustproof clear gloss coat. Or let the kids paint them, just be sure to sand away any rough edges on the can first. Stick the scrap metal flowers in and around your garden.
