If you have a creative mind, you can make a planter out of just about anything. An old leather or rubber boot can make a great planter for indoors or out, as well as an interesting conversation piece.

The classic boot planter is just an old shoe lined with plastic or rubber. The larger the boot, the larger your plants can be. A fireman’s boot is big enough for large plants, even some vegetables, while a child’s rain boot is the right size for a dainty flower. I’m personally a fan of cowboy boots, especially the ones with a variety of different colors and a butterfly pattern. Think Daisy Duke planting daisies in her boots.
If you are using a leather construction or cowboy boot, you’ll need to waterproof it first. Spray it inside and out with a leather waterproofing spray. You can paint the outside of the boot if you choose, or let it go au natural–especially if you already like the look of the boot. Stuff newspaper in the boot’s toe so it holds it shape, and then insert a planter pot into the leg of the boot as far as it will go.
Boot planters are a fun garden accent. A family of boots looks really cool lined up near a door, as though everyone took of their shoes before going in the house.
