DIY Greenhouse

Although mid-summer isn’t the time to be using a greenhouse, it’s not a bad time to think about building one for the upcoming cooler weather. Greenhouses work by trapping the sun’s heat to create a warm indoor environment for growing plants. Buying a greenhouse can be pricey, but you there are a number of ways to make one without spending a fortune.

The basic elements of a greenhouse are a frame and walls that let the sun’s rays spill in. The walls can be made of anything that you can see through, including glass, plexi-glass or sheet plastic. A frame can be anything that will hold up your walls. Cheap options include two-by-fours or PVC piping. PVC seems to be a popular choice because it’s flexible, so you can create a tunnel-shaped greenhouse without the hassle of measuring and cutting lumber. PVC is also lightweight, so your greenhouse can be mobile. Bring it out and place it over in-ground plants to draw in heat and protect them from frost.

I enjoyed this video that shows how you can make a hoop greenhouse for about $25!
