Fear of insects is probably one of the most common phobias. Unfortunately it’s almost impossible to garden without being around the little critters. To take the first steps towards overcoming the fears, try to identify what it is you don’t like about insects. Is it how they look? Their legs? Their size? The way they move?
You can also minimize your fears through learning about different types of insects you’ll see in the garden. Although some are ugly and can do damage to plants, they are not harmful to humans. For the few garden insects that do bite or sting, most humans do not have allergic or other reactions, so even a sting/bite is not a very serious injury to be afraid of.
Above all, exposure to insects will calm fears. Once you get used to sharing your garden and seeing certain bugs around, you’ll learn to change the way you see them.
