By definition, succulents are plants with fleshy water storage organs in their leaves, roots and stems. Their ability to store water makes them highly drought resistant and adaptable to even the driest climates. This ability to adapt to a variety of growing conditions has resulted in a number of attractive plant shapes, including tall spikes, tight rosettes and paddle-shaped leaves.

Some of the best known succulents are cacti, of which there are dozens of species. Popular plants, including aloe and agave, are also succulents.No matter what type of succulent you plan to grow, their care requirements are about the same. They like full light and indoor temperatures between 85 and 55 F. Although they can store water, they still need to be watered occasionally. Allow the soil to dry between waterings and never let the plant sit in water.

Since many succulent houseplants are small, they make a beautiful dish garden when a few varieties are mixed together.
