Chrysanthemums are a favorite fall flower, but there are many other options available. Other fall-blooming perennials include  Japanese Anemone, Liatris and Goldenrod. Bulb flowers like Surprise Lilly, Colchicum and Showy Crocus will also bloom long after other flowers have died off. Combine a variety of fall-blooming flowers to create a gorgeous color display when many other gardens have succumbed to the browns and grays of winter!

Here are the details…

Japanese Anemone: Tall (two to four feet), daisy-like with red or white blooms. Prefers shade and frequent watering. Begins blooming in September.

Liatris: Grassy plant with large pink or purple blooms. Grows best in full sun.

Goldenrod: Grassy plant with bright golden fronds. Likes full sun, can become weed-like if not cut back.

Surprise Lilly: Lilly that prefers full sun and well-drained soil. The surprise is how they come back in fall after appearing to die at the end of spring.

Colchicum: Crocus-like flowers ranging in color from white to purple. Best in partial shade.

Showy Crocus: Vast variety of bloom colors (even blue!). Grows in full to partial shade.
