Christmas is over and it’s just about time to take down that tree. If you went with a fresh cut tree this year, there are several environmentally friendly ways to dispose of your tree.
The first and most apparent way to recycle your Christmas tree is by turning it into compost. You will need to cut the tree into manageable chunks before adding it to your compost bin. Be sure to also add some “brown” materials to the bin, because all the branches and needles of a fresh tree is a massive source of green material and you don’t want to throw off the compost bin’s balance.
If you don’t compost at home, consider giving your tree to a neighbor gardener as a belated Christmas gift. Many cities also offer tree collection services, where unneeded trees are collected by the local waste service department and brought to local farms for making compost.
Outside of composting, you can get creative and really “recycle” your tree into something useful. Hang cranberry and popcorn strands on the old tree, place it outside and let birds congregate and snack. Or make potpourri using pine needles and other familiar winter flowers and spices.
