New Year’s Garden Resolutions

The start of a new year is a time when many of us resolve to make some changes and do things better in the year to come. With 2012 officially here and a new gardening season only a few months away, now is as good a time as any to make some New Year’s resolutions that can improve your green thumb.

The start of a new year is a time when many of us resolve to make some changes and do things better in the year to come. With 2012 officially here and a new gardening season only a few months away, now is as good a time as any to make some New Year’s resolutions that can improve your green thumb.

Resolve to weed regularly. You know all too well that slacking off on weeding at the beginning of the season can lead to an uncontrollable mess by mid-summer. Don’t get caught playing catch up this year. Make weeding a regular task every time you go out to your garden.

Resolve to conserve water. There are so many ways to save water and still keep a bountiful garden. Use a rain barrel, or just focus on saving clean wastewater from your home (like after you boil pasta or rinse dishes.) Plant native flora because they are perfectly adapted to the precipitation conditions in your region. Also remember to review the lawn sprinkler settings to make sure you’re not overwatering.

Go organic in 2012. Toss out the chemical fertilizers and additives from last year’s garden and move forward with a clean, earth-friendly garden. Start a compost bin. Use beneficial insects. Try companion planting or save seeds.

Find ways to save time without sacrificing on your garden’s quality. Lasagna gardens are a no-fuss way to get a fertile garden started with little effort on your part. Organize your garden shed to make tools easy to find.

Best wishes for a fruitful 2012!
