Did you ever get a May Day basket when you were a kid?

The spring holiday is often a favorite with little ones as it’s a time to give (and get) fun little treats.

What is May Day?

May Day is celebrated across the globe as a time to honor spring. While celebrations and traditions vary from place to place, flowers are usually a big part of May Day.

Contemporary May Day celebrations were influenced by early Romans who honored the beginning of May with a huge festival called Floralia. The five-day festival was to honor the Goddess Flora with offerings of flowers, dancing, May Queens and the classic maypole.

What’s a maypole?

A maypole is a wooden pole that is painted and decorated with flowers, ribbons, and streamers. Dancing or singing takes place around the maypole during celebrations. Sometimes the maypole streamers are used during choreographed dances.

May Day gift baskets

Nowadays it’s popular to celebrate the spring holiday with a May Day gift basket. The giver leaves a little basket filled with flowers and treats at the doorstep, rings the bell, and runs away. If the person receiving the gift catches the gift giver, then they have full dibs on giving ’em a kiss! It’s popular to give May Day baskets to neighbors, kids, or that special someone you’ve been crushing on.
