If you’re a green thumb, then resolve to spend more time out in the garden this year. Here are 4 New Year’s Resolution ideas to get your wheels turning.

Consider outsourcing

If your time is a precious premium, then consider hiring out pesky lawn chores that you don’t enjoy doing so you can instead focus on gardening tasks that are relaxing and therapeutic for you. It is a hobby after all, so why not make it fun — even if it means hiring a neighborhood kid to rake the leaves.

Protect yourself

Part of the reason people love gardening so much is that it gets them outdoors and in touch with nature. We love the fresh air and feeling of sunshine so much that we tend to forget the health consequences that are involved with too much exposure.

Protect yourself from the elements by always putting on sunscreen when heading outdoors. A gardening hat and gloves can also do wonders in shielding your skin from the sun (and prolonging pesky age spots).

If you’re prone to allergies, make note of which plants tend to make you sneezy and either try to remove them from your yard or take an allergy pill before doing extensive work outdoors.

Work smarter, not harder

Focus in on the areas that will make your garden work harder so you don’t have to and free up time for more enjoyable tasks. Make a commitment to focus on the areas where you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck — soil health, weed control, and perennial plants.

A healthy soil base is not only crucial for growing beautiful plants, it also requires less overall work once established because the plants are already getting the TLC they need the natural way.

Weed control might be a big time commitment up front, but once they are under control you’ll spend way less time trying to battle them in your garden beds, freeing up your time for other fun tasks.

Strategically plant perennials throughout the yard so you get a year-round show of color and texture. Having perennials established allows you to easily change the look with each season by simply adding a few colorful annuals. The best part? If you don’t feel like planting annuals then you’ll still have a great looking yard with the perennials.

And most importantly…

Have fun!

Challenge yourself by planting a new plant or trying a different gardening technique, hold a garden party to show off your work to family and friends, or simply take a little nap in the backyard. Make sure to enjoy yourself. Doing so will make this a New Year’s Resolution you’ll actually keep.
