Growing from seeds isn’t just for die-hard gardeners. It can be relatively easy to do once you give it a try.
If you’re anxious to get gardening, starting seeds indoors while the weather is still cold out will get you a head-start on your planting season. Growing from seeds can also be a cost-effective way to grow plants from scratch rather than waiting to purchase them as seedlings from a nursery.
Supplies you’ll need:
Containers.Choose a material that allows extra moisture to drain and has several inches of growing room for seedlings. Recycle old seedling holders from last year’s planting season or pick up a seedling flat from a nursery. If on a budget you could make your own container on the cheap by repurposing egg cartons, plastic yogurt containers, or milk cartons.
Soil. Look for a seed-starting soil rather than a basic potting soil. Soil that holds in moisture is best.
Light source. Seeds should ideally be placed near a window that’s warm and receives indirect sunlight without getting too hot. If natural light isn’t an option, an artificial plant light can come in handy. You also might be able to sprout seeds by covering the seed-starting tray with a piece of clear plastic.
Labels and marking pens. It’s a good idea to keep your seeds marked so that it’s easier to keep things organized. If planting a flat of the same seeds, one label will do. If planting multiple seeds in one area, consider marking popsicle sticks with the name of the plant to keep everything easily identifiable.
Seeds. If you’re new to starting from seed, then start with some plants that are easy to grow. Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, kale and peas are all good options to consider.
Water. Get a watering can that you can easily move around the house depending on the location you choose to start the seeds.
