Materials for DIY wood bead necklace
Gather the materials you’ll need for your DIY necklace including paint, paint brush, 10 1′ wood beads with predrilled holes, painters tape and a necklace chain.
Before you get started
Some of the wood beads will have residue where the hole was drilled.
Clear the hole in the wood bead
Simply take the end of your paint brush and push it through the hole and twist. This will loosen any wood particles stuck in there and make it easy to string your DIY necklace after painting.
Ready to use bead
Once you have done this to all 10 beads you are ready to paint them.
Start with the first bead
Grab your painters tape and start masking off half of the bead.
Wrap the painters tape around the bead
Leave exactly half of the wood bead showing.
Making sure to seal the edges.
Sealing the edges tightly will ensure your paint won’t bleed onto the other half of the wood bead.
Repeat on all 10 beads
Now you are ready for the fun part of this DIY necklace tutorial.
Pour your paint
Pour a small amount of each color you are planning to use on your wood beads onto a paint tray.
Paint the exposed side of the bead, leaving the tape in place.
You will want to paint two beads exactly the same for each color you want on your DIY necklace. For this example, we used five paint colors, and ended up with ten painted beads.
Once the paint has dried, carefully peel back the painters tape.
You should now have a crisp, painted line on your bead.
Line up the beads in the order you want them to be on your necklace.
Play around with the placement of the painted beads until you find the color order you prefer for your DIY necklace.
String the first painted wood bead
String the first bead onto the necklace, making sure the wooden end goes on first.
String the second wood bead
Then take the second bead (of the same color as the first) and string it onto the chain, but this time have the color side of the bead go on the necklace first, making the two color sides meet.
Align the colored halves inward
Take a second to make sure your beads are strung in the proper order.
Continue stringing each set of painted beads
Do this for each color, making sure the wood ends touch each other and the color ends touch each other.
Each set of painted wood beads should follow the same pattern
Wooden halves should line up with wooden halves, and painted halves with painted halves until you have used all the painted beads.
Complete the chain
Once all of your painted wood beads have been strung onto the chain, close the clasp and you’re ready to show your beautiful DIY necklace off!
