In the 21 years I’ve lived in my house we have had six cats, and they’ve all had different food preferences. At the moment I have one who will eat literally anything (and has the chonky cat size to show for it) and one who, canned-food-wise, will only eat one specific can of Fancy Feast blend that, unfortunately, is only sold in packs along with other flavors. I’ve spent a lot of time walking to local pet shops and ordering cat food online to see if I can entice her to eat literally anything else canned. But she does, happily, always eat her dry food, which I get delivered to my door.
When you own pets you go through all kinds of efforts to keep them fed and happy. Martha Stewart even makes homemade dog food, a step I have not yet taken for my cats. If you’re still searching for cat food that your baby tigers will love, or need to cater to a special diet (my cousin’s tomcat, for instance, eats food specific to his urinary tract infections), online pet sites can be your best tool. So, while in the past we’ve rounded up the best places to buy dog food online, here are our favorite websites for buying quality cat food.
Walmart
Here’s the dry food my littlest cat eats, pretty much exclusively. It’s inexpensive, especially if I order it from Walmart, so I really shouldn’t complain about her limited palette. I like that Walmart will deliver or you can arrange to pick it up at a store. The food blend is from good old Purina and mostly made from chicken. Importantly to me — and you cat owners will know what I’m talking about — our little cat has never vomited this up.
Petco
Weruva is a specialty-store brand but you can find it at PetCo.com and get it delivered, too. My fat cat loves fish and this Mideast Feast variety is her absolute fave. Warning: It really smells and looks like fish, not a brown pâté but chunky fish parts. If your cat loves anything from the ocean, they will come running when you open the can.
The Honest Kitchen
For a more boutique food-shopping experience — we’re talking human-grade food, but for cats — check out this team that operates out of San Diego. They make high-quality dog and cat food with a money-back guarantee. This minced chicken and salmon recipe comes in a resealable box, like a juice box, rather than a can, and you can store it in the fridge if you dole it out over more than a day.
PetSmart
It’s nice that you can order food to pick up at your local Pet Smart store. They’ll also ship to you, and in my city (Brooklyn), they’ll send an order same-day via Doordash. It’s a nice perk that keeps me from staring longingly at the store’s cats up for adoption, and I also like that Pet Smart includes a lot of specialty foods. And yep, I’m back to the topic of cat puking, because if that’s a problem you have, I know it’s a tough one. The reviews on this food for digestive health convince me that it’s worth trying if you have a sensitive-tummy cat.
Chewy
Chewy has a (truly!) no-hassle return policy and lovely customer service, which earns them serious pet-parent loyalty. There’s also an auto-ship option if you order the same thing, including dry or wet food, every month. It’s easy to add treats and cat toys to your order and enjoy the $4.95 flat-rate shipping. This Savory Centers variety pack is what I get about once a month. It comes nicely bundled as a box of two and while the price isn’t wildly lower than I’d find walking the aisles of a big-box store, I love having the heavy package come right to my door.
Amazon
Of course I get human gifts and more through Amazon Prime’s lightning-fast delivery, but I honestly didn’t think of the site for cat food until my kid adopted a 3-month-old kitten. Then we discovered this special food, which is also appropriate for a pregnant or lactating mama cat. It’s pricey, but you only use it for a few short months of their feline lives, and I found it to be totally worth it, especially if a kitten or pregnant cat falls into your life unexpectedly and you want to fatten them up fast. Read some of the thousand-plus five-star reviews and you’ll see what I mean.
And in case your cat, like my cousin’s, suffers from urinary tract issues, here’s the specialized food she orders for him on Amazon too.
Ultimate Pet Nutrition
A veterinarian founded this brand and website with a full line of treats and supplements for both dogs and cats. My cousin’s kitty is mad about their freeze-dried chicken, which he gets as a treat. This popular variety is actually chicken liver, which is a real winner of a flavor if you’re a cat. One reviewer says he sprinkles this on top of other food to entice his older pet to eat — kind of like sprinkling sugar on top of cereal for us humans, except healthy.
