Reasons you shouldn’t be embarrassed by a sex shop

Life’s far too short to be afraid of setting foot inside a sex shop. Find out how erotica stores have changed in the past few years and then treat yourself to a little pleasure shopping either on your own or with a group of friends.

Fun with friends

Always wanted to take a look around a sex shop but haven’t had the courage? Grab a friend and take the plunge. Make a night of it — hit the wine bar for some bruschetta and bubbly, then head to the sex shop and treat yourselves to something fun. You might be surprised how much you enjoy checking out all the goodies and sharing a few giggles with a girlfriend.

Sex shops have gone mainstream
(thanks Fifty Shades of Grey)

Times, they’re a-changing. Not too long ago, we had to whisper the words “sex shop” because the mere mention of the place felt taboo. Today, sex toys and accessories have gone mainstream — in large part due to the popularity of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. Now vibrators are handed out in goodie bags at blogger conferences and can be found on the shelves of big box stores and convenience stores. With sex paraphernalia being so widely accepted, there’s no stigma associated with erotica stores — so go ahead and explore the wide selection.

Everyone’s doing it

When 84-year-old Barbara Walters is joking about having a vibrator on The View, you know there’s no reason to be embarrassed to shop for one of your own. The rapidly growing (sorry — no pun intended) sex enhancement product industry jumped 7.5 percent in 2013 to over $600 million and is expected to reach nearly $800 million by 2018. There’s never been a better time to get in on the action and join the more than 50 percent of women who say they’ve used a vibrator.

Sex toys and so much more

Vibrators may be the first product that comes to mind when discussing sex shops, but leading specialty retailers in this industry aren’t just about sex toys. These mainstream shops carry a huge selection of intimate items including apparel, lingerie, candles, massage lotion and other adult novelties. You could shop online, but when you’re looking for adult items like these, wouldn’t you want to check them out in person (and avoid cookies and pop-up ads you may not want appearing on your computer)?

Quick tip:

Vibrators have come a long way since Charlotte discovered the Rabbit on Sex and the City. New products are made for couples to enjoy together (and one even vibrates to the beat of the music on your iPod!)
