Dad surprises daughter with awesomely creative wedding dance (VIDEO)

This father and daughter decided to ditch wedding tradition, and go with something a little more their speed — they played ball.

The video starts off as your typical father-daughter dance might — the slow but sweet ballad “What a Wonderful World” sung by Louis Armstrong plays as the two meet on the dance floor. Then something weird happens. Dad suddenly stops the dance, and I immediately think he’s either hurt, uncomfortable, or protesting his daughter’s recent nuptials. But instead the music changes, and the emcee brings out… baseball mitts?

Dad decided to share a moment with his daughter that fit their personalities and relationship more than a slow dance. What results is a game of catch that’s so simple and genuine, you’ll have a hard time watching it without sniffling. You can imagine them playing together years ago when she was just a little girl, and he was teaching her how to throw overhand. Check out the whole video for maximum sweetness.

It’s moments like this that I’d want to remember most at such an important milestone in my life, and I applaud this father for daring to be different. He writes on the video’s YouTube page, “My daughter has always found her own path. She played flag football at 6. She hated wearing dresses. She wore a tuxedo to her first communion. She lettered in soccer and track. She then became an engineer for the largest automaker in the world when she was 22. I could not imagine having a traditional father-daughter dance with her. That is not what we were or are… So I came up with this. She had no idea!” OK, this story just got 10 times cuter. Excuse me while I go call my father and tell him I love him.

In recent years, many marriage-related traditions have been revamped to better fit the social atmosphere of today. And while I think it’s still lovely to share a moment with your parents on your wedding day, I don’t see why it has to be a dance between father and daughter and/or mother and son. Here are some other wedding dance alternatives that might be fun to try instead.

Father/daughter mother/son dance alternatives

1. Family three-legged race

Whichever family side wins (bride or groom) pays for the honeymoon.

2. Family line dancing

Always a good time, fun to watch, and if you’ve got southern roots, it’ll bring you right back home.

3. Reenact favorite movie scenes

My dad and I would no doubt do the Miracle Max scene from Princess Bride. Cute, about love and hilarious.

4. Live band karaoke

This could be duets between family members (new and old), or tribute songs to loved ones. My dad would probably sing “She’s Got a Way” to my mom (which is how they met), and I’d never stop crying.
