Safe sex shouldn’t be an either/or option, but there aren’t many other options when it comes to male prophylactics, but a group of doctors wants to change that.
Dr. Mahua Choudhury, assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, and a team of colleagues are working to develop a new type of condom made with a strong elastic polymer.

The polymer, called hydrogel, is already used in products like contact lenses, but these researchers are combining it with an antioxidant that will release and prevent the replication of HIV. It also has stimulant properties that can enhance sexual pleasure and physiological stimulation, according to Dr. Choudhury, adding that the point is to make it something people “actually want to use.”
And it will ultimately “revolutionize” the prevention of HIV.
“We are not only making a novel material for condoms to prevent the HIV infection, but we are also aiming to eradicate this infection if possible,” Dr. Choudhury told the Daily Mail.
