Affair-proofing your relationship

Infidelity can happen in any relationship. However, it doesn’t have to happen to you. Below are three tips to strengthen your relationship and help kick cheating to the curb.

1. Don’t Ignore the Signs or Let Problems in Your Relationship Go Unresolved

If you are aware of the signs that your partner may be drifting, you might be able to save your relationship before it goes too far. Major warning signals that things may be on the rocks include constant fighting, a poor sex life, and/or a sudden change in the amount of time you spend together. Even if you are not experiencing any of these things, but have a gut feeling that somehow things are wrong, the best step to take is to talk to your partner and be open to communication. Don’t just shut down and refuse to address the frustrations in the relationship. It’s important to turn to each other and not away when experiencing relationship bumps.

2. Spend More Time with Other (Happy) Couples

While it’s fun to go out dancing with your single girlfriends, it can make the temptation to cheat more prevalent. If they are looking to meet men, there’s a good chance you will too. Instead, try to spend more time with other couple friends. Besides the sense of camaraderie that comes with hanging out with other pairs, being with others who’ve made a commitment to each other can help reaffirm your own.

3. Make Your Relationship a Priority

Many people make the mistake of confusing a healthy relationship with one that is merely stable. In a healthy relationship, there is continual growth that results in it remaining dynamic and exciting. In a merely stable one, both partners simply maintain the status quo, leaving room for either to eventually become bored and look outside the relationship for excitement and fulfillment.

However, you can prevent this by reenergizing your relationship. This means making plans to do new and fun things with your partner and remembering what it is that brought you together in the first place. As long as you continue to have fun and make a commitment to put the relationship first, you can build a bond that can withstand anything.
