How to be yourself in a relationship

Dating can cause even the most confident among us to hide who we really are, thinking it will help us find or hang onto a guy. There is no substitute for the real you, so don’t change your personality to match what you think someone wants. Instead, stay true to the fabulous person you are.

Let go of insecurities.

Insecurities — about sex, waist size, breast size, job title — can hold you back and make you feel like you must pretend to be something you’re not. If you want a relationship to work, you need to silence those negative voices in your head. Be yourself, and don’t worry about what he’s thinking and if he’s going to stick around. If he doesn’t like you for you, he isn’t worth your time.

Be bold.

Keeping quiet about your likes, dislikes, beliefs and opinions in a relationship just because you want to be on the same page as your guy can be tempting. This can lead to fights farther down the road, though, when he finds out you actually hate golf, despise beer and wing night, and can’t bear to watch another action comedy. Having things in common is great, but having your own opinions is perfectly natural.

Don’t hide your quirks.

Your quirks make you interesting, so don’t hide them just because you think it will put a guy off or make him think you’re weird. Weird is good, and having unique hobbies just makes you a more interesting, well-rounded person.

Loosen up.

Stop worrying so much about pleasing your guy (and everyone else around you), and just have a good time. Life is too short to spend so much time and energy trying to be someone you’re not. Loosen up and spend more time working on being OK with who you are now.
