Sensory play is all about learning and having fun at the same time. Engage your child’s senses with these fun sensory craft ideas!
DIY rain stick in a bottle
What you’ll need:
- empty water bottle
- dry spaghetti noodles
- toothpicks
- funnel
- rice, quinoa or other small grains
- glue
What you’ll do:
- Start by filling the empty water bottle with dry spaghetti noodles. If the noodles are too tall for the bottle, break them so that they will fit.
- Next, add toothpicks to the water bottle to fill in any open spaces between the spaghetti noodles.
- Place the funnel in the top of the bottle and add 1/2 cup of small dry grains to the bottle.
- Put some glue around the threading inside the bottle cap, then twist the cap on.
- Tilt the bottle back and forth to create the sound of rain as the grains move through the bottle.
Plastic bag painting
What you’ll need:
- gallon-size Ziploc bag
- paint
- clear packing tape
What you’ll do:
- Lay the Ziploc bag flat on the counter.
- Put a couple of tablespoons of paint in each corner on the inside of the bag, then seal the bag shut.
- Tape the bag along the top and bottom to the table top or to a window to keep it from shifting around.
- Let your child run their fingers over the bag to mix the colors together for mess-free finger painting fun!
Sandpaper sensory activity
What you’ll need:
- sandpaper
- pen
- old scissors
- glue
- cardstock or foam board
What you’ll do:
- Draw shapes on the back side of the sandpaper.
- Use an old pair of scissors to cut out the shapes (sandpaper can damage scissors, so don’t use a good pair).
- Glue the sandpaper shapes to a piece of cardstock or foam board.
- Have your child feel the shapes and identify them with his or her eyes closed.
