Sunflowers are synonymous with summer, but they can brighten up your abode all year long when you let your kids get crafty with these bright blooms! From handprint sunflower art to sunflower seed crafts, check out these four sunflower crafts for kids that are just as cheery as they are fun to make.
Paper plate sunflower seed craft
Sunflower seed crafts hold a hidden lesson in science, especially when teaching kids where those yummy kernels come from. Just be sure to watch younger crafters while they handle those salty tidbits; you don’t want a fun craft for kids to turn into a choking hazard!
What you’ll need:
- Paper plate
- Scissors
- Craft or school glue
- Yellow foam sheet, cut into strips
- Green foam sheet
- Pencil
- Sunflower seeds in their shells
What you’ll do:
- Help your child cut yellow foam strips into even rectangles and cut out sunflower petals with scissors; older kids may be able to stack the pieces to cut more than one petal at a time.
- Next, use your pencil to sketch a wide stem and two leaves onto your green foam sheet and cut the shape out with scissors. Glue to the bottom edge of the plate where the plate meets the table.
- Then, show your child how to glue the petals around the plate, letting the petals hang over the edge of the plate just a bit.
- Finally, squeeze glue liberally in the center of the paper plate and have your kiddo pour the sunflower seeds over the glue until you cannot see the plate underneath. Be sure to spread the seeds around and press them down into the glue so they’ll stick!
- Once your sunflower seed craft is dried, your youngsters will have a better understanding of where sunflower seeds come from as well as a neat project to hang proudly on the wall.
Handprint sunflower craft
The best part about this handprint sunflower craft for kids is the fact that more than one of your kids can participate to create this sunny masterpiece! Use one child’s set of hands for the leaves and the other child’s hands for the petals and you’ll have a beautiful bloom that you’ll cherish for summers to come.
What you’ll need:
- White cardstock paper
- Yellow tempura or acrylic paint
- Green tempura or acrylic paint
- Brown tempura or acrylic paint
- Foam paint brush
What you’ll do:
- Using the foam brush, have your child paint a stem with the green paint from the bottom to two-thirds of the way up the page, leaving room for the sunflower.
- Next, paint the palm of your youngster’s left hand with green paint using the foam brush and press a handprint alongside the “stem,” with the palm of your child’s print touching the stem to create a leaf. Repeat with your kiddo’s left hand and then give both hands a good wash.
- While your green stem and leaves are drying, use the foam brush to paint your child’s palm with yellow paint and create a handprint to form some of the petals for this sunflower craft. Add paint to the same palm and repeat until you’ve formed a large sunflower atop the green stem. Now wash those hands again!
- Finally, help your child repeatedly dip a fingertip into the brown paint and print “seeds” in the center of the sunflower. Allow to dry completely for a keepsake sunflower craft you can give to grandparents or keep for yourself!

Sunflower napkin ring craft
A hit with the tweens and teens in your life, this sunflower napkin ring craft will keep your cloth napkins looking party perfect all year long!
What you’ll need:
- Silk sunflower
- Green pipe cleaner
- Craft glue
What you’ll do:
- Guide your youngster to gently remove the silk sunflower from its plastic stem and set aside. Be sure to remove the leaves, too! Tip: If the leaves are set separately on their own plastic base along the stem, gently remove the leaves from the plastic so you can slide it onto the bottom of the sunflower’s plastic base and secure with glue.
- Next, wrap your pipe cleaner around your child’s four fingers twice to form two rings; twist the ends together along the rings to secure the circular shape — and to form a sturdier base in which to secure your flower.
- Then glue your silk sunflower to the pipe cleaner ring at the spot where you twisted them together and allow to dry completely. Now your kiddo can set a table he or she is proud of thanks to this easy sunflower craft for kids!
Tissue paper sunflower craft
Easy enough for toddlers and preschoolers yet still fun for school-aged kids, this colorful sunflower craft focuses on fine motor skills hidden in the fun of creating crafts with Mom.
What you’ll need:
- Scissors
- Yellow tissue paper
- Green tissue paper
- Brown tissue paper
- Construction paper
- Pencil
- Craft or school glue
What you’ll do:
- Cut all three of your tissue paper colors into two-inch squares by two-inch squares.
- Have your child begin crumpling them up into small balls, leaving just a little bit of bounce in them — not too tight — while you sketch a sunflower stem, leaves and petals shape on your construction paper with a pencil.
- Cut out your shape and apply the glue to all of the “petals.” Then show your youngster how to press the yellow tissue paper balls to the petals until they are all filled in.
- Next, move on to the brown tissue paper balls and apply with glue to the center of your sunflower craft.
- Finally, apply glue to the stem and leaves of this craft for kids and press the green tissue paper balls onto the paper until the original cut-out is completely covered. Once it’s dry, your kiddo can display this sunflower craft masterpiece on the wall to brighten up any room!
