DIY Halloween costume accessories

Store-bought Halloween costumes can be expensive, which is why homemade costumes are such a popular choice. If you are looking to DIY your child’s costume this year, check out these easy homemade costume accessories for your little pirate or princess.

Homemade felt superhero cape

What you’ll need:

  • 3/4 yard of felt
  • additional sheets of craft felt
  • scissors
  • fabric glue
  • velcro

What you’ll do:

  1. Fold the felt in half lengthwise, and cut a triangular shape out of the felt.
  2. At the top of the triangle, cut out a U-shape to make the neck opening where the cape will wrap around the shoulders.
  3. Use the fabric glue to attach velcro to the 2 pieces of the cape that go around the shoulders.
  4. Cut out letters or shapes from the additional sheets of craft felt and use the craft glue to stick them to the cape.
  5. Once the glue has dried, the cape is ready to wear!

Easy foam pirate sword

What you’ll need:

  • foam pipe insulation
  • colored duct tape
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun

What you’ll do:

  1. Cut a piece of pipe insulation to the desired length of your sword.
  2. Cut a pointed tip at one end of the pipe insulation. Glue the pointed tip together with hot glue.
  3. Cut a crossbar for the sword out of the pipe insulation.
  4. Cut a rounded notch out of the back side of the center of the crossbar so that it fits around the main part of the sword.
  5. Place the crossbar on top of the sword and use duct tape to secure the 2 pieces of foam to each other.

Glittery DIY fairy wings

What you’ll need:

  • 4 sheets of glitter scrapbook paper

  • ribbon
  • 1/2-inch elastic
  • scissors
  • pen
  • hot glue gun

What you’ll do:

  1. Lay a sheet of glitter paper glitter-side down.
  2. Draw a leaf shape on the back of the glitter paper, then cut it out.
  3. Use the leaf as a template to cut out leaf shapes from the 3 remaining sheets of glitter paper.
  4. Cut a 6-inch circle from the piece of coordinating card stock.
  5. Use hot glue to glue each section of the wings to the card stock circle.
  6. Cut several pieces of ribbon and glue them to the center of the wings.
  7. Glue an artificial flower over the top of the ribbons.
  8. Cut 2 lengths of elastic that are each 12 inches long.
  9. Make a loop out of each length of elastic. Turn the wings over and glue the 2 loops to the card stock circle to form the arm straps.

Easy Halloween princess wand

What you’ll need:

  • wooden dowel
  • craft paint
  • paintbrush
