I love fall — or autumn as fancy people say. It has always been my favorite time of year. However, as an adult I find myself wishing that I was a kid, especially in fall.
Kids have all the luck in fall, they really do. Here’s why…
Fall clothes
When I was a kid I got an entirely new wardrobe every fall! New sweaters and pants and jeans and shoes and boots and a jacket and a hat and scarf and mittens. Everything. New! Sure, this was because I outgrew all my old stuff. Kids grow fast. I don’t grow anymore which means no reason (or excuse) to buy all new clothes.
Piles of leaves
Remember jumping in leaf piles? It was awesome as a kid. Now it is itchy. And leaves get stuck in my hair and down my shirt. I don’t remember this happening as a kid. And the piles don’t provide adequate padding. Our yard leaf piles just aren’t big enough to properly cushion my fall. Ouch. Plus, it makes a mess. A mess that I have to rake up all over again.
The Thanksgiving kids’ table
I miss the kids’ table at Thanksgiving. I don’t remember arguing about politics or discussing work or the weather at the kids’ table. The kids’ table was the place to be. It was way, way more fun.
Wish list
Remember making extensive Christmas/Hanukkah/etc. gift lists? I truly believed that it was possible to get everything! I never did, but the hope and excitement was there. Now I just have an Amazon.com wish list but I’m pretty sure Santa doesn’t check it.
I still love fall. And the good news is that I get to relive it vicariously through my kids.
