A cowboy Christmas

If you’re feeling weary of the typical holiday fare, we have just what you need for a Cowboy Christmas party that will have your family yelling, “yee-haw!” You can keep it in the family, or go all-out by inviting your neighbors and friends to join in the action.

Make it beautiful

Most likely, your home is already adorned with Christmas decorations, so you don’t have to do too much to prepare your space for the party. That said, use your traditional holiday colors of red and green to play up the cowboy theme. Here are a couple of ideas to make the decor something special.

  • Bandana place mats. Bandanas usually come in bold colors like red, green, blue and brown. These colors work beautifully with traditional Christmas colors, so just use bandanas as place mats (or sew several together for a table runner) for a special touch.
  • Rustic Christmas trees and wreaths. If you don’t already have wreaths hanging in your home, consider decorating with rustic wreaths of pinecones, horseshoes or bandanas. We also love the idea of sprinkling homemade topiaries — which look like Christmas trees — around your home. Follow the directions at Crafts ‘n Coffee for your own DIY topiaries!
  • Unique pillow covers. Does your living room need a quick cowboy update? Simply wrap your pillows with colorful bandanas, following these directions from Creative Jewish Mom, for a continuation of the cowboy theme.
  • Cowboy printables. Don’t forget to label your appetizers, entrees and desserts with adorable cowboy-themed printables! We like this set from A Blissful Nest Shop on Etsy for your labeling needs.

Cowboy fare

All good cowboys and cowgirls work up a healthy appetite while playing, but there’s no need to make a fancy spread when simple foods are popular and easy.

  • Cowboy salad. Kids may not flock to salad the way that adults do, but that doesn’t mean you can’t offer a few healthful options on your menu. We like to provide a cowboy salad, like this one featured on Oxford Impressions, for tasty and colorful toppings for the Frito pie.
  • Frito pie. If you’ve never had a Frito pie, you are truly missing out. Brynne Cramer of Gluten Free Hungry Girl provided the recipe for this healthy and delicious make-ahead Frito pie.
  • Mason jar sippies. Whether you decide to serve eggnog, apple cider or punch, make the beverages special by serving them in mason jars.
  • S’more trail mix. S’mores are great around a campfire, but not so great for an indoor party with sticky little hands. Update the traditional s’more by mixing together 4 cups of Golden Graham cereal with 2 cups mini marshmallows, 2 cups chocolate chips, and 2 cups pretzel sticks. That’s it!

Happiness is craftiness

There’s no end to cowboy-themed party games, like pin the tail on the donkey, lasso practice and horseshoes. Once the kids are tired out, settle them down for some fun with crafts. We really like the painting sets available through We Bring the Party on Etsy, like this wooden horseshoe paint set.

Send them home happy

No Christmas party is complete without a parting gift and Christmas cookies. Combine these two necessities into one unique favor by following these directions from Texas Farmer’s Daughter. You’ll place all the ingredients required for cowboy cookies into a mason jar for your guests to easily bake once they go home.
