The birth of the Christ Child is told in the gospels of Luke and Matthew. Within these accounts, you can find beautiful and inspirational baby name ideas.

The Virgin Mary was betrothed to Joseph when she learned that she was carrying the Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Mary and Joseph are two of the most traditional monikers in baby name history and include variations such as Murray and Josephina.

The Angel Gabriel told Mary that she would bear a son.

Angel is a name that has become popular for girls and boys alike. For a feminine version of Gabriel, consider Gabriella.

When Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s son John the Baptist stirs in her womb.

Elizabeth is a beautiful stand-alone name that can be shortened to Eliza or Beth, among others. John is one of the most popular baby boy names of all time. Consider Joanna or Jonna for a girl.

Joseph was reassured in a dream by an angel who said, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Jesus is the holiest of names. And in his gospel 1:23, Matthew provides the basis for another name: Emmanuel, which translates to “God is with us.”

The Nativity

Jesus was born in a manger in the town of Bethlehem.

Shorten Bethlehem to consider Beth for a baby girl.

The angels brought “good news of great joy,” to the shepherds, proclaiming, “To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Choose Joy or Noell for a girl and David for a boy.

The Magi (or Three Kings or Three Wisemen) followed a star to find the one born “King of the Jews.” They presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Pay tribute to the Magi with an exotic baby name. Try Baltasar, Caspar (or Gaspar) and Melchiorfor a boy or Star for a girl. Or take inspiration from the gifts with names like Goldie, Frank and Myrna.

The story of the Nativity of Jesus has given rise to well-known canticles such as the Benedictus (Song of Zechariah) and the Gloria in Excelsis.

King Herod was threatened by the reported birth of the King of the Jews.

Like Judas, Pontius and Adolf, Herod is one of those baby names you just want to avoid.

To escape Herod’s brutality, Joseph, Mary and Jesus fled to Egypt before settling in Nazareth.

Egypt has become an increasingly popular baby name for a baby girl.
