Tia Mowry talks holiday plans, motherhood and the importance of vaccines

Tia Mowry rose to fame with the hit show Sister, Sister with her real-life twin sister Tamera Mowry, however she is now embracing the new role of mom to her son Cree. The busy mom chatted with us about her holiday plans, parenting advice to her sister Tamera, as well as her thoughts on how she keeps her family healthy with the flu vaccine.

Actress Tia Mowry took time out of her busy schedule to chat with us about her holiday plans with her husband Cory Hardrict and their 2-year-old son Cree, as well as how she keeps her family healthy during the winter months.

SheKnows: What are some of your family’s favorite holiday traditions?

Tia Mowry: My family and I love to spend time in the snow around the holidays! My husband and I enjoy going to Utah or Colorado to spend quality time together. We also like watching classic holiday movies! My favorite holiday movies are A Christmas Story, Home Alone, Groundhog Day and Polar Express.

SK: What is Cree asking Santa to bring for Christmas this year?

TM: Right now Cree is fascinated with helicopters and fire trucks. I have a feeling Santa will bring him some good toys to play with, and of course share with his cousin Aden.

SK: How do you keep your family healthy during the busy winter months?

TM: Despite my busy schedule, I recognize that the winter months are the most important time to focus on my family’s health and help protect them from contagious viruses prevalent during the winter. I take an active role in making health a priority in our household and taking every preventive measure against the flu, including washing hands, practicing healthy eating habits, exercising regularly and most importantly getting vaccinated!

SK: Why do you think it is important for moms to make sure both they and their kids are vaccinated against the flu?

TM: Like most moms, I know that if one person in my household gets the flu, it can derail the entire family. In the past, I overlooked the importance of flu vaccination but after hearing about last season’s intense flu season, I spoke with my doctor and learned that annual flu vaccination is the single best way to help prevent the flu. Now, I make sure my family gets an annual flu vaccine — our choice being FluMist Quadrivalent. What’s great about FluMist Quadrivalent is that it’s needle-free, which for me personally was a huge deal. Let’s just say I am not the biggest needle fan!

That’s why I teamed up with MedImmune Specialty Care to create a humorous video about why flu vaccination is important in my life and encourage others to get vaccinated.

SK: What are some of your favorite mom beauty products this time of the year?

TM: My can’t-live-without beauty product is Yves Saint Laurent “Touche Éclat” concealer.

SK: In your new show Instant Mom, your character’s life changes when she suddenly becomes a mom. How has your life changed since becoming a mom to Cree?

TM: I see a lot of similarities between my character on Instant Mom and my personal life. When I first became a mom, my life revolved around Cree and making him happy, so when I went back to work when Cree was two months old, it was challenging to find a balance. I wasn’t always able to put him to bed at night and developed a huge amount of guilt about that, so changing my perspective helped a lot. Ultimately, I realized that working to provide a better life for Cree and setting a good example for him is the best thing I can do for him and my family. My family comes first and everything I do is for Cree, which is similar to my character, Stephanie.

SK: What advice did you give your twin sister Tamera as she raises her 1-year-old son Aden?

TM: The best piece of parenting advice that I give to Tamera, and all mothers, is to forgive yourself. Having been a mom for a few years, I know the high expectation we set for ourselves but the reality is, you won’t be perfect every day. Another piece of advice I have recently given to Tamera is to make health a priority in her household for the whole family.

SK: Does Cree love playing with his cousin Aden?

TM: Yes! They are both still very young but when they get together they love to play with one another. Let’s just say this definitely puts a smile on all of our faces!

SK: What advice would you give other working moms who are trying to balance it all?

TM: Being a mother doesn’t come with a handbook on how to raise a perfect child. I take it one day at a time and prioritize and do my best to balance my career and family life.

I also have guidelines I have set for myself:

  • Define your priorities
  • Take your time
  • Ask your employer if bringing your baby to work is an option
  • Be confident in your caretaker
  • Go easier on yourself!

SK: Your fans want to know — do you see more kids in your future?

TM: Definitely, sooner rather than later! It’s something my husband and I are talking about on a daily basis. I do not know when, but I would love to have another child.
