Classic baby names with a modern twist

Classic baby names are making a major comeback. Add a clever twist to your favorite traditional moniker to make it stand out among the rest.

For boys: Create a double name

Currently, the most popular baby names for boys include a fun mix of traditional and trendy: Jacob, Mason, Ethan, Noah, William, Liam, Michael, Alexander and Aiden. Consider combining a classic favorite with a newer name to create an old-new double name.

A double name differs from a standard first-and-middle name combination in that they’re always used together, like John-Paul, Christopher-Robin or Billy-Ray. Try joining a special family name with a more contemporary moniker for something completely unexpected.

For girls: Change the spelling

The most popular baby names for girls are honest-to-goodness classics. Sophia, Emma, Isabella, Olivia, Ava, Emily, Abigail and Elizabeth are all on current top 10 lists. You can stay on-trend with a beloved classic name, while making it your own with a special little twist.

If there’s one thing modern parents are good at, it’s creating unique spelling variations of traditional names. Try one or more of these tips to develop your baby’s very own unique spelling.

Substitute K or CK for a hard-sounding C or CH. This spelling modification has the biggest impact at the beginning of a name (Cassandra becomes Kassandra), but it’s an effective tool for the middle or end of a name as well (Michaela becomes Mikaela).

Experiment with vowels. The Top 1,000 Baby Names List is loaded with unusual vowel combinations, particularly among female names.
