Angelina Jolie’s wedding dress was like a refrigerator for her kids’ artwork, and it’s perfect

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt recently tied the knot, and the way they incorporated their children into the ceremony — and directly into her wedding dress — was amazing.

Power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made headlines when they recently got married, but the news got even more noteworthy when photos of her wedding dress were revealed. The dress featured their children’s artwork woven into the material of her wedding dress — a move many think was ridiculous and tacky. Sorry, haters, but it’s her family and her wedding, and what you think doesn’t matter.

We all have our kids’ artwork in our homes somewhere. Our refrigerator hosts plenty, as many fridges do. There are many ways to keep that artwork permanent, too — you can get plush toys made out of your kids’ drawings, you can frame them and some moms (like me) even get their child’s creations tattooed on them.

Jolie took the notion of “fridge art” in a different direction — her wedding veil was chock full of her kids’ drawings. No, she didn’t hand them all Sharpies and tell them to go to town coloring all over her dress. They were drawings that were sewn in with many different thread colors. So you wouldn’t do that, you say? It looked crummy, you say? Jolie doesn’t care, and her kids undoubtedly loved it.

Parents who bring children into the relationship or don’t get married until after they’ve had kids often incorporate their kids into their weddings. This is nothing new. While some ways are questionable (do you remember the mom who dragged her baby down the aisle on the train of her wedding dress?), parents most often include kids in the wedding party itself.

The Jolie-Pitt family did this. Their family, which includes Maddox, 13, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 6, is a very close-knit group, and it makes complete sense that they’d want their kids incorporated into the wedding. Jolie and Pitt have always come across as a couple that treasures their children — and it shows. The oldest boys walked Jolie down the aisle, Zahara and Vivienne served as flower girls and Shiloh and Knox were the ring bearers.

I do admit I’m not a huge traditional wedding fanatic, and I think that alternative ceremonies where there are already kids in the family can be a lot of fun. Weddings don’t have to be a serious, formal occasion, and these children were probably thrilled to have their art on their mom’s wedding dress. I think the dress rocks and will become a treasured family keepsake. It shows that even though you’re rich, beautiful and famous you can still be a fun, funky mom. And that’s awesome.
