Create a lap book to help your child explore our Thanksgiving traditions.
Making a lap book is a fun way for a child to learn about a topic — like the origins of our Thanksgiving holiday. You can look up facts that will interest your child about Thanksgiving traditions, and the first Thanksgiving and add in personal details — like your family’s personal Thanksgiving traditions.
Supplies:
- Manila folder
- Assorted construction paper
- Markers
- Scissors (and edging scissors)
- Assorted Thanksgiving scrapbook stickers and other embellishments
- Glue
Directions:
1. Open and fold
Open your manila folder. Fold each half in toward the center, and crease.
2. Cut feathers
Cut large feather shapes from assorted scrapbook papers. Each should be 11-12 inches long, and 2-4 inches wide.
3. Glue feathers
Glue the feathers in place. Start with the feather in the middle, gluing it to just 1 side.
4. More feathers
Add the rest of the feathers.
5. Cut turkey pieces
Cut a large bowling-pin shape for the turkey head and body, as well as eyes, feet, beak and a wattle.
6. Glue turkey
Glue into place. Add a scrapbooking text sticker.
7. Add information
Create facts and information to glue to the inside of the lap book. Use additional scrapbooking stickers as embellishments.
Lap books are a fun and creative twist on a traditional report. It allows you to use visual elements, as well as text, to create your message. As you craft your lap book, think of ways you can share your story with both pictures and words.
