If you haven’t yet made plans for March Break, and have decided to seek out some “staycation” fun right here in Canada, there are plenty of exciting last-minute ideas for making family memories.
Go west
There is no better time to hit the mountains for some family skiing and snowboarding than March. Destinations in Western Canada, such as Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia and Banff in Alberta, offer some great family packages that include special activities for the kids at this time of year. If your family is better suited to having fun indoors, try any of the amazing art galleries and museums in cities such as Vancouver, which has spring break activities running for children, or perhaps the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, which has something for everyone, and enough activities on offer to be the focus of the trip.
Central time
The provinces of Ontario and Quebec also offer lots of choice for families looking to spend time on the slopes, such as Blue Mountain Collingwood in Ontario and Mont Tremblant or Mont Ste. Anne in Quebec. Another great idea for March in these areas is to visit a maple syrup festival, where the entire family is sure to be thrilled with the educational, fun and delicious activities on offer. Ottawa is always a great choice when travelling with children because of the fantastic museums and if you visit in March you may also catch the Ottawa Irish Festival and/or St. Patrick’s Day parade! It might be a tad chilly standing outside by Niagara Falls, but March Break deals can be had on indoor water fun at places such as Great Wolf Lodge and Fallsview Indoor Waterpark. The Quebec Winter Carnival ends in mid-February, but visitors in March can check out the ice hotel, Hotel de Glace, in the province, which offers special March Break activities. In Manitoba, the Winnipeg Children’s Museum has all kinds of March Break fun lined-up, and sports-loving families might want to take in a Winnipeg Jets hockey game.
Down east
Fun in the snow can be had in the Maritimes at well-known ski destinations such as Crabbe Mountain and Ski Wentworth in New Brunswick, or Marble Mountain in Newfoundland. In the Halifax area, check out the outdoor adventure at Hatfield Farm in Hammonds Plains, which includes a chuckwagon or sleigh ride (depending on snow) as well as an outdoor playground, the rubber rodeo, and a petting zoo. Nova Scotia is also home to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Discovery Centre — all with special activities on the agenda for March Break.
