There’s no denying that there are plenty of great kid-friendly movies coming out these days. But sometimes it can be nice to enjoy an evening of oldies. The ’90s were full of fun family movies your kids will love. Next family night, introduce your children to one of these great family films.
Toy Story
Your little ones may be used to all sorts of animation and 3-D technology, but Toy Story — the first fully computer-generated full-length feature film — is bound to still be a crowd-pleaser. The heartwarming story of Woody, the cowboy toy who worries about being outdone by a new, fancier spaceman toy, is full of fun, humour and life lessons.
Matilda
Based on the book by Roald Dahl, the film tells the story of a lovely little girl named Matilda, who is incredibly smart and able to move objects with her mind. A true underdog, Matilda must overcome a terrible family and evil principal with the help of her gifts and a kind teacher.
Babe
Babe, the little pig with big dreams, teaches us all that just because you’re dealt a certain hand at birth doesn’t mean that’s all you’re capable of. When Babe sets his sights on becoming the very first pig sheepdog, he refuses to quit until he makes it happen.
101 Dalmatians
In this 1996 live-action remake of the 1961 Disney cartoon, the evil Cruella De Vil plots to kidnap a group of puppies for their fur. The puppies, with the help of some other clever animals, must plan a way to escape and undo the evil villainess.
Homeward Bound
Two dogs and a cat become worried when they are left in the care of their owners’ family friend and choose to set off across the country to find them. Between nature, man and wild kingdom, they encounter danger after danger on their journey.
Home Alone
Although Home Alone features a Christmas backdrop, it can certainly be enjoyed at any time of the year. Hilarity ensues when two bumbling burglars decide to rob a home inhabited by an 8-year-old boy who has been forgotten and left behind by his family as they rushed off for Christmas vacation. You can’t help but laugh as the wise child outwits the disastrous criminals with one smart trap after another.
Free Willy
This is a great movie to teach your little ones about the connection between human beings and nature. When a young boy learns the owners of an aquarium are planning to kill his beloved whale, Willy, for not performing well enough, the boy risks everything to set him free.
The Princess Bride
Although technically this classic came out in 1987, it played a special role in the childhoods of many young people throughout the ’90s. The film begins with a grandfather sitting down with his grandson to tell him a magical fairy tale that has been passed down through the generations. It is a tale filled with swordplay, romance, fantasy, mystical creatures, pirates, princes and more that is sure to captivate both adults and children alike.
Beauty and the Beast
In this classic Disney fairy tale, a kind and generous French girl named Belle is forced to be the prisoner of a prince who has been entrapped in the form of a beast. Can the two overcome all obstacles and find a happy ending, or will they always be at odds with each other? A hush will certainly fall over your living room as the kids wait to find out!
