Original homemade Halloween costumes for kids

Your child doesn’t have to dress up like a witch or a ghost or Super Woman year after year. This year, try suggesting one of these fun and creative original costume ideas you can make yourselves.

Super Mario

This Nintendo hero is a great old-school throwback people of all ages can appreciate. Plus you can find the components at most thrift stores or Dollaramas, so it’s very budget-friendly.

Requirements:

• 1 red paperboy hat (baseball cap will work too)
• 1 “M” shape made out of felt, fabric or coloured paper
• 1 red long-sleeved shirt
• 1 pair of overalls
• 1 pair of white gloves
• 1 pair of black or brown boots
• Black eyeliner
• Hot glue gun

Directions:

1. Using the hot glue gun, attach the “M” to the front of the red hat. Let it dry and cool.
2. Help your child into the shirt, overalls, gloves, boots and hat.
3. Use black eyeliner to draw on a moustache.
4. You’re done!

Rubik’s cube

This costume is both clever and fun. Plus it costs next to nothing if you have some old paint lying around the house!

Requirements:

• One large square box (ask for one at the grocery store if you have none on hand)
• One metre stick
• Paint in blue, red, green, orange, yellow, white and black
• Paintbrush
• Pencil
• Box cutter
• Small Rubik’s cube (optional)

Directions:

1. Begin by cutting out one side of the box — preferably the side with open flaps.
2. Cut a hole through which your child’s head will comfortably fit in the opposite side of the box.
3. Cut out an armhole on either side of the head hole in the side walls of the box.
4. Using the metre stick and pencil, divide each side of the box into nine equal squares.
5. This is where having a small Rubik’s cube comes in handy. Twist it up to get an idea of where different colour blocks can go. If you don’t have a Rubik’s cube, you can just paint each square in blue, red, green, orange, yellow and white as you wish.
6. Once the coloured paint has dried, brush the black paint along the lines to complete the look.
7. Let it dry, and you’re done! Your child can wear any comfortable long-sleeved top and pants underneath for trick-or-treating or to school.

LEGO piece

This is one costume that undoubtedly young and old alike can appreciate.

Requirements:

• 1 large rectangular box (ask for one at the grocery store if you have none on hand)
• 6 large paper cups that can be painted
• Box cutter
• Hot glue gun
• Paint in a colour of your choosing
• Paintbrush

Directions:

1. Begin by cutting out one of the smaller sides of the box (not the long sides). This is where your child’s feet will come out.
2. Cut a hole in the opposite side through which his or her head can comfortably fit.
3. Cut out an armhole on either side of the head hole in the side walls of the box.
4. Glue upside-down paper cups in two straight lines of three along the long, front side of the box. Make sure they are spread out to make them look like the grooves into which another LEGO piece would fit.
5. Paint the whole costume in the colour of your choosing. Let dry, and you’re done!
