Many kids can’t get enough of crafting. But constantly buying jewellery-making kits and model airplanes can get expensive. Let your kids explore their creativity at virtually no cost to you with this simple egg carton creation.
With all the specialty crafting kits out there, it’s easy for kids to think they can only be creative when you buy specific items to do so. But that simply isn’t the case. Most of the supplies required for this craft you’ll already have lying around the house, and anything you’re missing can be picked up at the dollar store for next to nothing. In just moments you’ll have adorable little creatures to decorate your home.
Egg carton ladybugs
Materials:
- Egg carton
- Scissors
- Red paint
- Black paint
- Paintbrush
- Red glitter
- Pipe cleaner (gold, silver or black)
- Hot glue gun
- Black and white sequins
Directions:
Cut an egg holder out of the egg carton. Trim around the edges so it stands easily.
Paint two-thirds of the holder red. Add an extra layer of paint to ensure it is wet and will hold the glitter.
Gently shake glitter over the paint until well distributed. Let it dry for 10 minutes or so. Shake off excess glitter.
Paint the uncoloured section black. Let it dry.
Using a scissor blade, poke two holes in the top of the egg holder where the red and black paints meet. Cut two evenly sized pieces of pipe cleaner, and twist them around your little finger to create antenna shapes. Poke the straight ends through the holes in the egg holder.
Plug in the glue gun, and let it warm up. Place small dollops of glue on the red portion of the egg holder, and apply black sequins. Do these one at a time so the glue doesn’t dry in between.
Glue two white sequins in the centre of the black section. You can also use googlie eyes for a more goofy expression.
Keep in mind
Kids can do the majority of this craft on their own, but younger ones will need your assistance for sections such as where the hot glue gun is used and when creating the antenna holes. So make sure you’re nearby to help out if necessary, or make it a bonding experience, and do one of your own at the same time!
