Fun and educational preschool video games

Almost every child likes to play video games, and why wouldn’t they? Games are fun and entertaining, and when you choose the right game for your child, it’s also great for their educational development.

Your young baby gamer has much more to gain from a video game than the sheer entertainment factor. Sure, plugging in for an afternoon will keep them busy, but video games can also help teach your child valuable skills, such spelling, math and problem solving. So why not keep your preschooler having fun while learning with these educational video games?

Gaming systems

  • Cosmic Family, Wii. Have your child join the Cosmic family for a cool space adventure that includes playing memory games and solving puzzles. Bright graphics and games await your child as he or she travels the galaxy, and all the while interactive learning and problem solving are taking place.
  • Sesame Street: Ready, Set, Grover! Wii and Nintendo DS. Encourage healthy habits in your children with help from some of their favourite Sesame Street characters. It’s never too early to learn about such healthy habits as nutrition and fitness, and Grover and friends make it easy with simple games that make learning fun.

Computer games

  • Teacher’s Pet Pre-kindergarten. Your preschooler will have a blast while playing the several games included in this super-pack. Simple and easy to navigate, it’s great for ongoing play and as a teaching aid for important academic skills, such as math, science and computer skills. It’s easy to install, and although the games are highly educational, they still come across as pure fun.
  • Reader Rabbit. Once your child enters grade school, you will likely hear about Reader Rabbit. But you don’t have to wait until then for your child to benefit from this software program. It has programs that target both your toddler and preschooler with interesting games to keep them entertained and learning.

Learning tablets

  • LeapFrog. This company offers several engaging and educational games, but just one of the fun ones to consider is Explorer Letter Factory. Your child will love helping a central character achieve his goal while he or she learns about the sounds and names of the letters of the alphabet.
  • InnoTab by VTech. Like LeapFrog, this company offers lots of brain-boosting preschool games to choose from, but it’s hard to deny the appeal of the more popular preschool TV characters. Keep your child interested with the instantly recognizable Dora and the game Let’s Help, which aids in building skills in logic, matching and in learning another language (Spanish).
