Grab your tent and pack the car, summer is here and it’s time to take the family camping.
For many families in Australia, summer means long school holidays and restless kids. Stave off the grumbling and get your kids into the great outdoors at some of these top family camping spots in Australia.
Before taking off just remember to check the local information such as weather, fire bans, permit requirements, camping fees or any restrictions on the land.
Queensland
One of the best areas to take your kids in South East Queensland is Lamington National Park. You can’t beat resting your heads in a rainforest, a far cry from the sites of the Gold Coast which is a mere 70 minutes away. A popular place to stay is the Binna Burra Mountain Lodge and Campsite where you can stay in pre-furnished safari tents or pitch your own.
If you want to experience camping style (for first timers) but don’t want to venture too deep into the outback, consider a few nights in a tent in Port Douglas. Families have spent many a starry night at the Glengarry Holiday Park where accommodation ranges from powered and ensuite sites to cabins and villas.
New South Wales
If you’re after a mix of bush meets the beach, try a few nights in South Durras near Batemans Bay. The Murramarang Beachfront Nature Resort offers camping and caravan sites or villas just a stones throw away from the beach.
Head north of Sydney to the Barrington Tops National Park where you can choose from multiple camping spots. Family activities include walking trails, lookouts and swimming spots.
Victoria
If your family enjoys a range of hiking, biking, fishing and swimming you can’t go past camping at the Rosebud foreshore (the southern end of the Morningon Penninsula). Even though they have nearly 1000 camping sites, you should get in early.
If being in the bush is more your style, there’s another option in Victoria. Explore Gippsland where you can choose to park your family in a national park, riverside or among some creeks. Many views and experiences await you.
Tasmania
A great family spot to enjoy Tasmania’s beautiful nature is Arthur River on the West Coast. The folk at the Arthur River Cabin Park say the land is “regularly frequented by a variety of native animals including Tassie devils, wombats, sea eagles and more”.
South Australia
A true SA experience is taking the family to the much-loved Kangaroo Island. Entertain the little ones with a beach stroll or dip in the rockpool, all located at Stokes Beach. The Rockpool Cafe & Caravan Park includes sites for tents or caravans, amenities and BBQ shelters.
Western Australia
A great option for young families who don’t like long car trips is Beelu National Park. While many may go for day trips, stay the night at the campgrounds. Nestled in the forest your family can still enjoy toilets, showers and a camping kitchen (equipped with electric BBQs).
Northern Territory
A family-friendly camping spot in the NT is Litchfield National Park, just 100 kilometres south-west of Darwin. Families have a choice of accommodation styles from a “safari camp”, caravan parks or tree-lined campgrounds. Just check accessibility during the wet season.
