At some stage your little girl will outgrow her pink fairy covered bedroom. Your son will want to paint his bedroom walls black and hang up hideous posters of zombies and skulls. Welcome to the teenage years. These SheKnows tips can help you find fun ways to personalise your teen’s room and transform it into a place they’ll love to hang out with their friends.
Get funky with a wall mural
From panoramic shots of cityscapes in black and white or tropical sunsets, to aliens landing and African animals, wall murals can be ordered to fit any size or budget. Pictured: Tears on my pillow.
Build a designer shoe rack
A perfect, functional, fun way for any teen with a shoe fetish to display their collection of footwear, whether it be Kylie Ryan heels or Air Jordan Kicks. Watch Sex and the City if you need some design inspiration, but all good shoe racks will feature lighting and cubby holes for at least 30 pairs.
Beautify with bean bags
Lots of jellybean-coloured bean bags are a cool way to add colour to any room and are great for extra seating when friends come over or snuggling up with a good book. With a variety of colours and prints available, it’s easy to tie in with any theme.
Make-up station
Every teenage girl loves cosmetics and what could be more fun than adding your daughter’s own personal make-up station featuring dedicated make-up drawers and an old-style theatre mirror with lights? They can be a challenge to find, but check out eBay. If you’re on a budget you might like to make your own illuminated mirror with a timber frame with Hollywood-style vanity lights (Oz Lighting, $102).
Chalkboard walls
Turn almost any surface into a chalkboard. Great to keep the budding graffiti artist from illegal activities. Also a cool way to list the house rules, record appointments to remember, exam timetables and assignment due dates.
Get creative with lighting
It’s amazing what lighting can do to a room. You can pimp your teenager’s room with bright neon signs and lights, add lamps with bedazzled lamp shades or, for the girlie girl, hang an elaborate chandelier above the bed.
Beaut bubble chairs
For a room with a contemporary twist, Adelta Bubble chairs are fabulously funky and come in clear Acrylglass with a chrome finish. Only available through Dedece in Sydney and Melbourne. Image courtesy of Dedece.
