DIY bedroom decor for teens

These fun and thrifty teen crafts will add a little colour and style to your daughter’s bedroom décor — and as an added bonus, they’re great fun to create together.

Jewellery board

There are few things teen girls love more than makeup and jewellery — and this sweet homemade jewellery board gives them every opportunity to admire their earrings and necklaces on a daily basis!

Materials:

• Old photo frame
• 1/4 metre of chicken wire
• 3 small door knobs
• Drill
• Staple gun
• Paint
• Scissors

Instructions:

1. Remove the glass and backing from the frame and paint in your desired colour.
2. Cut the chicken wire so it is slightly larger than the inside window of your frame.
3. Attach the chicken wire to the back of the frame using a staple gun.
4. Drill holes for the door knobs then attach to the bottom of the frame.

Paint chip bunting

This fun craft bunting is ideal for boys’ and girls’ rooms and it’s a cinch to make. Select one colour and stick with various shades within, or go multicoloured for a bold effect that brightens the room!

Materials:

• Guillotine or scissors
• Hole puncher
• Paint chip samples from a hardware store
• Wool/thread

Instructions:

1. Cut triangles out of the paint chips by cutting from the top corner to the bottom centre on both sides.
2. Punch holes in the top left and right corner of each triangle.
3. Arrange the colours in your desired pattern.
4. Thread together and tie at each end, allowing at least 20 centimetres on both sides for hanging.
5. Hang on the wall or across a window.

Pretty woollen chandeliers

A perfect activity for a rainy afternoon, these pretty woollen chandeliers look gorgeous when clustered together in one corner. Just be warned, it can be a messy process getting to the end result — but they truly do look spectacular!

Materials:

• Balloons
• Craft glue
• Cornflour
• Mixing bowl
• Rod or pole for hanging (curtain rod hanging between two stools works well)
• Scissors
• Vaseline
• Wool

Instructions:

1. Blow up balloons to various sizes (only blow to half-capacity if you wish to achieve a circular shape).
2. Place a rod or pole between two chairs/stools to create a DIY drying station. Place a plastic rubbish bag or disposable plastic tablecloth underneath as a drip floor.
3. Attach balloons to the rod.
4. Tie wool around the stem of the balloon and allow the remainder of the wool to hang down. Make sure the balloon is suspended and not touching the surrounding balloons.
5. Cover each balloon lightly in Vaseline (so that the wool does not stick to the balloon once it is dried and popped).
6. Mix half a bottle of craft glue with roughly 1/2 cup of cornflour and 1/4 cup of water.
7. Dip the wool into the glue mixture, squeeze out excess and begin wrapping around the balloon vertically and then switch to horizontally. Once you have covered a good part of your balloon, cut the yarn and tie off to a surrounding piece. Ideally, do this near the stem of the balloon so it won’t stand out when hanging.
8. Allow yarn chandeliers to hang for at least 24 hours in a dry, covered area (any less than 24 hours will not allow enough time for the glue to properly harden!).
9. Pop the balloon and tap the coils of wool to get rid of any of the dried glue crystals. Hang and enjoy!
