DIY puppet theatre

Welcome the theatre into your own home with this imaginative puppet stage that will delight your children for years.

Kids love imaginative play. Why not give your child’s creative play a boost by building them their very own puppet theatre? This theatre comes together in an afternoon and folds away easily when not in use. Your kids will love making up their own stories to entertain and delight using this puppet theatre made from artist canvas.

Canvas puppet theatre

You’ll need:

  • 3 plain artist canvases — they all need to be the same height, but make two tall and skinny for the sides, and one square for the front
  • Acrylic paint to decorate
  • Brushes
  • Ribbon
  • 4 hinges
  • A drill (or a screwdriver)
  • 1 metre of ribbon
  • A newspaper
  • A pair of scissors
  • A pencil
  • A ruler

How to:

1

First, lay down a layer of newspaper to protect your work surface. Place each canvas next to each other on the newspaper and on the largest canvas, pencil in a square that will be used as the stage window.

2

Next, paint the canvas in the decoration of your choice, making sure you don’t go over the lines of the window. You could paint the canvas in thick red and yellow circus stripes, add bunting around the window, or create a landscape across the bottom.

3

When the canvas is dry, attach the hinges to create folding sides. These will support your stage so it can stand independently.

4

Finally, roll up the window of the stage and attach by tying a long string of ribbon around the roll of canvas and the top of the stage.
