Royal colour inspiration for the nursery

As part of the current renovations occuring at Apartment 1A (the former home of Princess Margaret), they will also be adding and decorating a nursery. If you’re geting ready to create a nursery too, here is some royal colour inspiration that might also work for Wills and Kate.

Royal blue

The obvious choice if a little prince is on the way is royal blue, a deep blue or navy blue. From her first engagement interview dress in 2010 through to her ever-watched daily wear, Kate strongly favours the dark blue hues. While it may not be a colour for all four walls, strong blues would look good in a feature wall or accents.

Pretty pastels

Kate has donned many a pastel gown, including lavender and blush pink. Both hues will create a delicate and soft ambience for a baby’s room, especially for a tiny princess. If favouring pastel colours, you can paint all walls of the room with it and then accent with white touches.

The golden touch

When having her coat of arms created, Kate’s design used a gorgeous golden yellow to highlight features such as a crown and acorns. This a great gender-neutral colour that can bring a happy and bright feel to any nursery. Go bold and use striking yellows in feature wallpapers or add a more subtle touch of pale yellow on all walls.

“Not finding out” beige

When keeping the sex of a baby secret, sometimes the best colour to go with is beige. It’s no longer considered a boring colour but instead it’s consider the perfect base for any room, especially a nursery. Well-known paint brand, Dulux, even has a shade called “Beige Royal” that they show can be matched beautifully with deep burgundy, light blue, chocolate brown, forest green and rich yellow. Slick beige onto your walls and then go wild with the colours you select for furniture, bedding and wall decals.

Painting prep

Whatever colour you select, household paint suppliers, Taubmans, recommend preparing the surface of the walls (Gyprock/plasterboard the most common surface) before applying the first coat of paint: “First it [the blank wall] needs to be dusted down, then any mould, dirt and grease removed by using sugar soap and scrubbing, then rinsing with clean water.”
