Creative baby shower themes

Throwing a baby shower to celebrate a new arrival?

Here are five creative baby shower themes perfect for boys, girls, twins and surprises!

When it comes to life’s big events it doesn’t get much bigger than the birth of a baby. New babies are something to celebrate and there’s no better way to announce the imminent arrival of a new baby than with a baby shower.

For mums-to-be, a baby shower is a great way to enjoy that one last pre-baby catch-up with friends and family. It’s a time for friends, family and co-workers to share advice, give gifts and celebrate the upcoming birth.

If you’re looking for fun, creative and simple themes for an upcoming baby shower then look no further — here are five cute baby shower themes to choose from, perfect for any upcoming bundle.

Green Sheep baby shower

Where is the Green Sheep? It’s a question many an eager mum will undoubtedly ask at some point so why not throw the mama-to-be a Green Sheep baby shower, inspired by the ever-popular children’s book by Mem Fox.

Perfect for a baby shower where you don’t know the gender, you can re-create the world of the Green Sheep with just a few simple touches.

For the table decorations think picnic style. Layer the table with a runner of Astroturf over a white table cloth and provide gingham napkins tied with string to create an outdoorsy feel. If you’re super organised you can even grow your own wheatgrass table centrepiece and stud it on the day with coloured gerberas.

Woolly sheep cut out of cardboard make great cupcake toppers and you can find a great selection of customisable Green Sheep-inspired baby shower invitations on Etsy.

Create a dessert table of sheep cupcakes made from marshmallows, rainbow jellies, woolly fairy floss and, of course, a Green Sheep cake.

For something savoury, why not offer some chilled pea soup, ricotta and spinach fritters or san choy bao lettuce cups alongside a refreshing jug or two of limeade or green apple juice.

Finally, make sure you buy a copy of Mem Fox’s Where is the Green Sheep? book for the mother-to-be as it’s sure to become a bedtime favourite.

Ships ahoy baby shower

Ships ahoy, it’s a boy! If there’s a new little man waiting to be born then this nautical-style baby shower theme will be sure to please.

Using a classic red, white and blue colour palette, setting the scene for a nautical baby shower is as easy as stringing some coloured streamers, making some flag bunting and placing some well-coiled rope. If you’d like to get really creative, you can wrap a plain wreath in red and white streamers to create your very own life buoy, or tie up striped red napkins with a mint lifesaver tied onto some string to perfect the theme.

There is a wonderful selection of fun invitations and printables available on Etsy that will suit a ships ahoy party and you can make your own cake toppers by cutting circles out of red and white striped paper and sticking them onto toothpicks.

You can have fun stocking a buffet table with all sorts of ocean-inspired goodies such as a bowl of blue jelly filled with shark gummies, nautical-coloured candies in glass jars, a tray of cupcakes or cookies nestled in edible graham-cracker sand and, of course, individual prawn cocktails served in martini glasses. If you want to serve something warm you could make individual fish pies or try your hand at a good old-fashioned paper cone of fish and chips.

A blue ombre cake topped with a toy sailboat is the perfect way to celebrate and you can pack up mini goldfish as seafood-inspired party favours.

About to pop baby shower

Know an expectant mother who’s about to pop? If she’s keeping mum about the gender of her new arrival then an about to pop baby shower theme is the perfect choice. Even if you know the gender, you can easily customise this party with either blue or pink decorations for a more personalised touch.

Decorations for this party are a cinch — think striped vintage-style popcorn containers, polka dot napkins and lots of balloons in the colour of your choice.

You can create a buffet table of foods that pop such as popcorn, cake pops, popcorn chicken, popcorn-flavoured ice cream and, of course, a piñata cake popping with sweet treats!

Offer guests popping streamers or bags of popping candy to celebrate with a bang and create sweet favours of caramel popcorn that make the perfect takeaway gift.

Peas in a pod baby shower

Planning a baby shower for a mum-to-be of twins? You can’t possibly go past a peas in the pod theme. This theme also works well for eco-mamas or mums who like to garden.

Green is the colour of choice with this theme so set up your table with a simple white cloth and create bunting from recycled hessian bags strung along some twine. Green polka-dot napkins tied up with string together with small milk bottles filled with spearmint milk and paper straws provide a vintage vegetable garden feel.

Create a dessert table with cupcakes decorated with chocolate “soil”, green apples, lime tarts, coloured popcorn, decorated cookies, green macarons and green foil-wrapped truffles tied into pods with green tissue paper. Savoury foods are a must as well, especially when you can offer mini pea quiches, mushy peas on party pies, green pea soup served in shot glasses and green cucumber sandwiches.

For the mum-to-be, celebrate her twin pregnancy with a gift of washcloths or cloth nappies rolled up into pea pods and send your guests off with small jars filled with green pea seedlings or packets of pea seeds to grow in their own homes.

Sugar and spice baby shower

Everyone knows that little girls are made from sugar and spice so if you’re celebrating the birth of a little lady then there’s no sweeter way to do it than with a sugar and spice baby shower.

If that mama-to-be is into all things girly then it’s time to get your pink on. A vintage tea party is a great place to start with floral teapots, pink napkins and a vintage tablecloth. You can get creative by making your own pink tissue paper flowers to string up as a garland or hang from the ceiling.

A pretty pink dessert table is a must and the sky is the limit in terms of the type of sweet treats you can create. Start with glittery pink macarons flavoured with rosewater, pink champagne cupcakes, pastel-coloured candies, lavender pound cake, pink lemonade and, of course, a pretty pink ombre cake. Or for something a bit different you could try your hand at a sugar and spice layer cake, perfect with a cup of hot chai tea.

Send your guests home with sweet onesie-shaped cookies decorated in pink icing, a jar full of pink M&M cookies to bake at home or a small pot of your very own spice mix.
