The chilling real estate ad for the home in Melvindale, Michigan, reads: “Come check out this unique home that includes a false wall and pop-out mirror that will make you feel like you just came out of a mystery novel.” What police discovered, however, was a horror story.
The house was home to a disturbed father-son duo who is charged with running a child-porn studio. The father, Charles Miller, was arrested two years ago, leaving the home to his son, Arthur, who was arrested in March 2015, also on child porn charges. Hopefully they will both be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and never see the light of day again, but it’s the extent to which they went to hide their crimes, however, that is just terrifying.
Andrew Arena, executive director of the Detroit Crime Commission and former special agent in charge of the FBI’s office in Detroit, told the Detroit News, “I’ve never seen anything like this. This is Addams Family-type stuff.”
And the crimes, they were awful. Images of girls as young as 7 were found among the thousands of pictures. Also found were drugs, guns, computers and recording devices on which the porn was stored.
The mother of two of the young victims told police her daughters occasionally stayed weekends in the home. Why they stayed there isn’t clear, but it’s stories like this that make us all a little more wary, make us wonder more what is going on behind closed doors all around us.
We don’t want to be paranoid and tapping walls in our neighbors’ homes to make sure they’re not false, but it is a reminder that we can’t trust everyone and that we should be vigilant because sickos like this can be anywhere — even next door.
So now this house sits on the market, listed at $77,200. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to buy it, unless it were to demolish the whole thing.
