Exploding chalk paint and other awesome outdoor painting ideas for kids

Kids love to paint, but don’t spend a beautiful summer day working on art indoors. Take the fun outside with these outdoor painting ideas that your kids are sure to love.

Exploding chalk paint

Supplies:

  • Corn starch
  • Food coloring
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Tissue
  • Ziploc bags

Directions:

  1. Fill each Ziploc bag with approximately 1/4 cup of corn starch.
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring to the bag.
  3. Pour approximately 1/2 cup of vinegar into the bag.
  4. Put 1 tablespoon of baking soda in a tissue and roll it up into a ball.
  5. Drop the ball of baking soda into the Ziploc bag and seal it shut.
  6. Give the bag a shake and then set it on the sidewalk. The vinegar will slowly interact with the baking soda and the chalk will explode on the sidewalk.

Supplies:

  • Squeeze bottle
  • Food coloring
  • Corn starch
  • Shaving cream
  • Funnel
  • Bowl

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, mix together a ratio of 1/3 corn starch to 2/3 shaving cream.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture to achieve your desired color.
  • Use the funnel to add the mixture to the squeeze bottle.
  • Shake the squeeze bottle then squeeze the paint out on the sidewalk.

Chalk spray paint

Supplies:

  • Spray bottle
  • Tempera paint
  • Water
  • Corn starch
  • Funnel

Directions:

  1. Use the funnel to put 1/2 cup of corn starch into the spray bottle.
  2. Squeeze a few tablespoons of tempera paint into the bottle.
  3. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with warm water.
  4. Spray the bottle on the sidewalk. The color of the paint will become even more vibrant as the paint dries.
