While attending a Tampa Bay Rays game this week, 10-year-old Jeremiah Sprague made a catch that likely saved his siblings from serious injury or worse.
It was his first time ever catching a homerun ball, and what a catch it was. He was sitting in the outfield with his mom, dad and two siblings — 5-year-old sister Abbie and 2-year-old brother Luke — when Asdrubal Cabrera hit a hard home run that was coming right at them.
While his parents reacted instinctively by ducking, Jeremiah’s instinct was to catch that ball.
And catch it, he did, right before it hit little Abbie and Luke. Cameras caught the whole thing and his family told WTSP that he’s had a great time watching himself make the catch over and over on MLB.com, ESPN and other news outlets complimenting his catch.
His parents’ reaction has been called “cowardly” by some, but you never know how you’re going to react in a situation like that. Sometimes our instincts take over and those instincts forget about our children. Jeremiah’s mom Hannah told WTSP, “We knew it was going to hit really close but it was just that instinct to protect yourself.”
We all like to think we’d think of them first, but the fact is unless we’re in that situation we’ll never know. Thankfully, for this family, Jeremiah was there to save the day.
Good for him. I hope someone signs him up for Little League if he’s not already playing.
