Zooey Deschanel’s new baby announcement comes with surprise twist

There are plenty of reasons to love America’s favorite quirky girl Zooey Deschanel, and here are two big ones: New Girl star Deschanel reportedly got secretly married and welcomed a new baby girl in the same weekend.

The last we heard of Deschanel, she was living life as her regular awesome self, expecting a baby and engaged to producer Jacob Pechenik. But as any Deschanel fan knows, part of the fun of being in the “Quirky Girl Fan Club” is that you never know what she’s going to do next. Deschanel is notorious for marching to the beat of her own drummer — whether it be rocking the nerd glasses on national TV or even getting married on the down low without any celebrity fanfare.

She’s just so cool. Thirty-five-year-old Deschanel has been treating her pregnancy and impending marriage as a packaged deal from the get-go. In January, Deschanel announced she was pregnant, with an engagement announcement to follow a week later. Fast forward a few trimesters later, and Deschanel has given birth to her new baby girl in Austin, Texas, and reportedly gotten married in a private ceremony within the same timeframe. (We’re waiting for news on a suitably quirky baby name, but we have a few suggestions if Deschanel is still looking.)

As a newlywed with a new baby, and as a working mom with a successful career, Deschanel is going to be busy. Her hit show New Girl is coming back for a fifth season this fall, and she’s also still crooning addicting tunes as part of the musical duo She & Him. Deschanel and Pechenik are working on a new film together called Rock the Kasbah, coming out this fall with Bill Murray, Bruce Willis and Taylor Kinney.

Deschanel’s star is on the rise, and it’s easy to see why. Not only is she carving out her own place in Hollywood as a unique funny girl and hipster fashion icon, but she’s living life in a way that is authentic and down to earth. Most major celeb milestones are preceded by a media storm of paparazzi. Deschanel checked marriage and baby off her list in her own signature “weird” (and very anti-Hollywood) way — she kept it to herself.

That’s the thing about Zooey Deschanel: She’s not trying to be anyone else. And funny enough, her quirky gal reputation is polarizing. You either love her, or you hate her. But it’s this genuine side that is going to serve her best as a mother. She’ll still have to figure out how to change a diaper blowout without getting poop on her arm like the rest of us, but she’s not going to have a problem teaching her daughter how to be herself.
