It’s an age-old struggle — getting kids out of bed and ready for school. There’s moaning, whining, snooze buttons being hit over and over, bribes, threats and more on many mornings in homes around the world. Rather than battle another day, one Georgia mom got creative and gave her 10-year-old daughter, Sophie, a wake-up call she’ll never forget.
Shelly Kent of Cumming, Georgia, said Sophie wasn’t exactly springing out of bed for school and instead hitting that snooze button one too many times. So she decided to blast her out of bed with the help of a live jazz band.

The band marched right into the soundly sleeping girl’s bedroom bright and early at 6:30 a.m. last Monday and burst into a peppy tune with tubas, trombones and drums blaring. Sophie was startled but a great a sport about the whole thing.

It was all part of a series of creative wake-up calls that are being done by radio show “The Bert Show,” which is awesome. Most parents wouldn’t be willing to fork up the cash for such an elaborate awakening, but perhaps just showing kids this video will be incentive enough to scare them out of bed.

To minimize the need for such extreme measures, making sure kids go to bed at a decent time and get plenty of sleep can also do wonders. While every child has a different need, experts say most school-age kids and preteens need 10-11 hours of sleep a night, while teens need about nine hours.
