3 DIY onesies to add to your baby’s collection

Your baby is adorable and deserves an outfit to match, so grab some plain onesies, a few craft bits and pieces, and get ready to pimp it up with three easy onesie DIYs.

1. Tie-dye onesie

This tie-dye onesie comes out with fun, sporadic blotches, but you can mix it up by folding and binding the onesie differently or by incorporating more than one colour.

Supplies:

  • Plain onesie
  • Pencil
  • Rubber bands
  • Fabric dye
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cling film
  • Fabric dye sealant (optional)

Directions:

Step 1. Wet and scrunch

Wet the onesie, wring it out, so it’s only slightly damp, and scrunch it a bit so it’s not too smooth.

Step 2. Spin

Place a pencil (or another sharp object, like a chopstick) in the centre of the onesie and spin it around so that the material twists around it.

Step 3. Bind it

Using rubber bands, bind the twisted onesie together so that it ends up forming a tight ball.

Step 4. Dye

Put gloves on and follow the directions on your fabric dye to prepare it. Then pour the dye over some of the sections created by the rubber bands, wrap it up in cling film and allow it to rest for at least 12 hours.

Step 5. Dry

Once the time is up, unwrap the onesie and hang it up to allow it to dry completely.

Step 6. Wash and wear

Wash the onesie before you allow your baby to wear it (fabric dyes can be harsh on baby skin). If you are concerned about the tie-dye fading, you can also use a fabric dye fixative to seal it.

2. Printed onesie

Although, personally, I find it adorable, you don’t have to use this template on your baby’s onesie. If there’s a different shape or silhouette that you prefer — there are lots online — use it instead and follow the steps.

Supplies:

  • Plain onesie
  • Template
  • Scissors
  • Washi tape
  • Sponge
  • Textile paint
  • Textile pen

Directions:

Step 1. Centre onesie

Fold the onesie in half to figure out where the centre is.

Step 2. Print and cut template

Print and cut out the hand template and centre it on the onesie. Then place washi tape on the back.

Step 3. Stick template

Using washi tape, stick the template to the onesie and flatten it as much as possible.

Step 4. Secure the area

Stick paper scraps around the template so that no paint can escape.

Step 5. Sponge paint

Dip the sponge into the textile paint and dab at the template, creating a print on the onesie.

Step 6. Peel off template

Peel off the template and allow the print to dry.

Step 7. Place writing under

Lift up the top of the onesie and place the writing underneath so that you can see it through the material.

Step 8. Trace writing

Pull the material tight so you can better see the writing. Then, using a textile pen, trace the words.

3. Appliqué onesie

This is such a fun technique and can be used with all kinds of shapes, silhouettes and even letters that spell out words. Make sure to mix it up with fun colours and fabric

Supplies:

  • Plain onesie
  • Template
  • Fabric
  • Binding
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pen
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Directions:

Step 1. Cut and trace template

Print and cut out the squirrel template and then place it on the left side of the material and trace around it. Next, cut out the eye from the template and trace that on another piece of fabric.

Step 2. Cut fabric

Using the material scissors, cut out the fabric templates.

Step 3. Iron it on

Place binding to the back of the squirrel template and use a hot iron to attach it to the onesie. Then use the binding to attach the eye patch and then, finally, the eye.

Step 4. Sew around the squirrel

Using a zig-zag stitch, sew around the outside of the squirrel.
