Kristin Cavallari reveals unusual inspiration for her third baby’s name

Kristin Cavallari‘s got her hands full now that she’s announced she’s expecting baby number three with Chicago Bears quarterback husband Jay Cutler. On top of the pregnancy fatigue and wrangling two toddlers, Kristin has to come up with an interesting baby name — for the third time.

Cavallari and Cutler are already the proud parents of two sons, Jaxon Wyatt, 16 months, and Camden Jack, 3. This makes the big news of the couple’s third baby announcement even bigger: Kristin is expecting a little girl.

Even to the untrained eye, you can see how Cavallari leans in her baby name choices. Names like Jaxon and Camden are trendy without being too “out there,” ranked at number 46 and number 100 in 2014, respectively. You’d think Cavallari would use the same trending baby name criteria for her third baby, but her inspiration for her new daughter’s name has caught us all off guard.

Cavallari confessed in an interview that she’s always had a baby girl’s name in her back pocket. When she was pregnant with her first son, Cavallari was inspired to name her future daughter after a woman’s dog:

“We picked out this baby girl’s name when I was pregnant with our first. I met a woman and her dog, and I loved her dog’s name. Funny enough, it was the name she had picked out if she had a girl, but she had boys, so she used it for her dog instead. Here we are 3.5 years later, and we are going to use that name for our little girl!”

It appears Cavallari’s keeping her favorite little girl’s name a surprise (at least to the public) until after she’s born in November 2015.

As easy as it would be to make fun of Cavallari for the story behind her baby’s name, she really isn’t doing anything all that weird. If we find out in a few months that her new daughter’s name is Spot or Lassie, we may be eating our words. But in reality, there are hundreds of popular female dog names that can be used interchangeably for a baby girl’s name. If Cavallari picks a trendy female dog name like Chloe, Molly or Charlotte, it would fit right in with her two sons’ trending names, and no one would be the wiser. Let’s not forget — cute girls’ names like Bella, Lucy, Bailey and Daisy were listed among the most popular dog names for 2014.

Cavallari may be on to something.

Cavallari may have an oddball inspiration, but the truth is, you can name your baby anything you want to. And most of us know that by the time that second or third kid rolls around, you’re running out of ideas. It’s not uncommon to name a baby after something special to you, like a beloved city, a favorite fashion designer or even a go-to comfort food. (Ron Howard famously gave his twin daughters the middle name Carlyle after where they were conceived — the Carlyle Hotel in New York City.)

It isn’t that much of a stretch to name your kid after a dog (though you may want to hold back on the baby-naming story until they’re old enough to appreciate the humor). We already know that this reality star has an eye for catchy baby names. Laugh all you want, but Cavallari could be starting a new baby-naming trend.
