Carey Mulligan continues the trend for traditional baby names

Following the birth of her baby daughter three weeks ago actress Carey Mulligan has revealed the little girl’s sweet name.

While promoting her latest film Suffragette in the U.S., Mulligan told Entertainment Tonight that she and musician husband Marcus Mumford chose the sweet, traditional name Evelyn for their new arrival.

However it doesn’t seem the process was particularly drawn-out or painstaking as the 30-year-old actress admitted that they “just came up with it.”

There’s a definite trend for traditional baby names in the celebrity world right now. In August Keira Knightley announced that her 3-month-old daughter was called Edie, a shortened form of Edith. Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton also chose Edith for their daughter, who has a hat-trick of traditional names: Edith Vivian Patricia. Other stars who have opted for classic girls’ names include Lily Allen, whose eldest daughter is Ethel; Scarlett Johansson and Romain Dauriac, who chose Rose Dorothy; and The Fast and the Furious star Vin Diesel, who named his baby girl Pauline.

According to Nameberry.com, the incredibly sweet meaning of Evelyn is “wished for child.” It was a hugely popular name a hundred years ago and is actually a gender-neutral name — perhaps the most famous Evelyn of all time was the male writer Evelyn Waugh.
