We try to savor time with our family during the busy and often rushed holidays by picking out one night a week on our calendar and designating it a family movie night — but not with just any movies…holiday-themed movies! We have been doing this every year now for the past eight years or so, and it is something everyone in our family looks forward to. And now, with four little ones, we spend a good chunk of time carefully choosing the order of our movie choices as everyone has their favorites.
A few of our family’s all-time favorite family-friendly Christmas movies include:
- The Polar Express
- A Charlie Brown Christmas
- Jingle All the Way
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas
- Frosty the Snowman
- An Elf’s Story (about the Elf on the Shelf tradition)
- Home Alone
- Prep & Landing
- All I want for Christmas
- Christmas with the Kranks
We definitely have a mix of old favorites and, in the past few years, have added a couple of newer releases like An Elf’s Story and Prep & Landing. We always look forward to pulling these out around this time every year!
Every family movie night we have always includes popcorn, it’s a must! And in the colder months, we serve it up with mugs of hot cocoa and marshmallows or hot apple cider with cinnamon sticks.
We also like to do a dessert. A movie is just not a movie without something sweet! One of our favorite special treats we like to have during our holiday movie nights is a yummy pie from Marie Callender’s, the Dutch apple pie to be exact! I love how easy they are to prepare and also how at the end of the night my kitchen is actually clean because I didn’t spend hours messing up any pots and pans to make them.
We love to make them more homemade by adding our own little touches and letting everyone put on their own fun toppings! Whipped cream and sprinkles on Dutch Apple pie is my son’s favorite combination.
Once we all have our desserts plated up and the popcorn is popped, we are all ready to snuggle up under a bunch of blankets and watch a movie together. Add in a mug full of hot cocoa with extra marshmallows and we have another sweet holiday moment to remember forever, hooray for holiday family movie night!
